We're in the midst of fall, and it's the peak season for photography. If you've been living under a rock, you probably know that I am a photographer.
This is the height of the season, making it very common for people to visit parks together, see other photographers, wave, and say hi.
As I'm at the park waiting for my family, I notice another family getting their photos taken. I see them laughing, having fun, twirling, and dancing together. They’re just having a great time, and I can't help but think to myself: what other careers allow you to get paid to bring joy, laughter, and memories while documenting amazing moments in people's lives? These milestones are truly special, and it's rare to have a career like that.
After 13 years in this field and thousands of hours spent on my computer—along with the countless social media posts and the overwhelming admin work—it's easy to feel discouraged. Sometimes it seems like people don’t see your work, you might not get hired as often as you’d like, or your follower count doesn’t reach the heights you hope for. Perhaps you’ve had to take a break for personal reasons, like having children. I’ve experienced all these seasons, and it can be disheartening.
Another year goes by in business, and I find myself wondering if I've reached the goals or milestones I set for myself. But I have to ask: am I doing a good job for my clients? Am I producing amazing content that they’ve used this year? Have I made great connections with people? Have I built relationships? Have I encouraged other photographers? I hope that in your own career, you can answer "yes" to these questions.
If you can, then you've had an amazing year. You might not have gained 20,000 followers or had the chance to shoot for JLo, or achieved whatever your bucket list photography dreams are. But if you are making slow and steady progress, expanding your knowledge, and creating amazing content, then you've had a great year.
I’m just preaching to myself and encouraging myself because, as a solopreneur, it can feel like it's just you talking to yourself all the time. We need to encourage one another.
